About the Artist
Lovelyn Tijesunimi-Israel (b. 1991) is a self-taught artist from Nigeria, with a discipline in Computer Science. She was a programmer for three years before she took up a challenge to try drawing, which sparked her interest in creating art.
Celebrated for her captivating line art and passion for minimalist aesthetics, Lovelyn's unique approach combines experimental techniques with fluid mediums, allowing her to explore and embrace the serendipitous nature of working with lines. Her work often reveals unexpected beauty in simplicity, inviting viewers to find profound meaning in the elegant interplay of form and space. She draws inspiration from the minimalistic style of Korean artists, further enriching her distinctive approach.
Lovelyn's optimistic approach to life guides her current artistic practice. She is particularly interested in painting as a form of visual therapy, especially for women dealing with traumatic experiences. A survivor of mental trauma from previous sexual abuse and undiagnosed ADHD, Lovelyn uses art as a medium to examine her traumatic memories and walk herself to a place of healing. Through her art, she not only finds solace but also offers a therapeutic journey for others.
In December 2023, Lovelyn had her first exhibition with the Center For Contemporary Art Lagos (CCA Lagos) at the Goethe Institute, marking a significant milestone in her artistic career.
